Why is the Liberal Revolution Day celebrated

Every July 11, Nicaragua is commemorated on the Day of the Liberal Revolution of 1893 ; a special date in which this revolutionary event that led to the transformation of the government and the construction of the current State of Nicaragua is remembered. Below we will tell you more about this event.

How was the Liberal Revolution Day born?

The Liberal Revolution of 1893 was led by José Zelaya López , a military man and politician who was also president of the country between 1893 and 1909. Besides him, there were also the conservative generals Eduardo Montiel and Joaquín Zavala .

The Day of the Liberal Revolution is celebrated on July 11 because it was this day in 1892 when Zelaya rose up against the government of Roberto Sacasa in the city of León. This act was supported by Anastario Ortiz, the Commander of Arms of the square, capturing the interim president Salvador Machado Agüero, of the conservative party.

After liberals formed and drafted the Act of the Revolutionary Junta on July 16, 1983, where they appointed José Santos Zelaya as president, they entered the capital of Managua, defeating the conservative armies on July 25 in the Battle of La Cuesta and they marched victoriously down the Calle del Triunfo, which still exists.

Thus, on July 31, 1893, the Liberals and Conservatives signed an agreement to assume the Liberal Government Junta, ending the 35 years of conservative governments in the country. Finally, on September 15, 1983, José Santos Zelaya is named president of Nicaragua with Anastasio Ortiz as vice president.
