Why is Flag Day celebrated

Every July 14 the National Flag Day is celebrated in Nicaragua ; date on which the creation and existence of this national symbol that identifies us throughout the world is celebrated and commemorated. Below we will tell you more about this event and Flag Day.

How was Flag Day born?

Flag Day was born on September 5, 1908 through a legislative decree that was not approved and published until August 27, 1971, thanks to the then president, General Anastasio Somoza Debayle. The decree "Law on Characteristics and Use of National Symbols" was published in La Gaceta, Official Gazette No. 194.

This decree established that every July 14 the Flag Day would be celebrated, since on this day but in 1970, the Chamorro-Bryan Treaty was suspended, which damaged the sovereignty of Nicaragua by the United States government, since It gave Americans perpetual rights to our territory so that they could build an interoceanic canal whenever they wanted to.

Now, it is worth clarifying that the decree of 1908 did not create the flag, but officially established the day of its celebration. The Flag of Nicaragua has existed since our country was erected as an independent State, that is, in 1854.

The Nicaraguan Flag consists of three horizontal lines of blue and white, where the blue stripes signify justice, loyalty, brotherhood, strength, courage and the color of the sky, as well as the Xolotlán lakes, the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. . White represents purity, integrity, equality, goodness, peace, and the nation.
